Advice from a staffing manager: 5 Tips for Job Seekers

Job searching Detroit? We recently sat down with Nikeeta Howell, Accountemps Staffing Manager in our Troy office, and asked her to share her top tips for job seekers in the Motor City.  Here is some of what she told us about working with a staffing firm:

“Regarding experience, job seekers should be as detailed as possible on their resume.” – The past rule of keeping your resume to one-page is no more. If you have a lot of experience, a two-page resume may be appropriate.

“All education and software skills should be listed on the resume.” – Include all of your educational experience, listing your most recent or most advanced degree first, working in reverse chronological order. If applicable, also list your continuing education and professional training.  Technical skills are also highly sought after by employees; be sure to include those to give the staffing manager the entire picture.

“Check voicemail throughout the day.” – Howell finds that she calls job seekers three to four times before they respond. When you are searching for a job, every phone call is important.  If you are late to return a call, it can send the wrong message to the staffing manager.

“Every job seeker should have a clean and polished LinkedIn profile.”LinkedIn is the most successful networking platform out there. If you are job searching, make sure you have a profile that reads like your resume, and don’t forget to include a professional photo.

“Job Seekers should make sure their Facebook is private, and if it is public they should make sure there is nothing inappropriate or derogatory on their page” – Many hiring managers turn to Facebook and Google to find out more about job seekers and candidates prior to interviewing and extending offers. You can run an online search on yourself before sending out resumes, and make sure your publicly accessible information puts you in a good light.
