How would you rate your company's employee onboarding process? Use this checklist to make sure you're properly welcoming and preparing new hires.
As an employer, your work isn't done once you've hired a new team member. It's also your responsibility to make the employee feel comfortable and get him or her up to speed. After all, it's not until a new hire is acclimated to the role and organization that the person can really fit in and make contributions.
According to a new OfficeTeam survey, most HR managers feel like their companies are doing a good job of getting new employees up and running: 50 percent polled felt their company’s onboarding process is very effective and 42 percent stated it’s somewhat effective.
Yet, more than half of workers interviewed said they’ve experienced a mishap when starting a new job. One-third of those surveyed noted their computer, phone or security access wasn’t properly set up on their first day, while 22 percent said they weren't given the necessary supplies. NEW EMPLOYEE CHECKLIST
__ Before the employee arrives, send a welcome email to team members and alert the receptionist.
__ Coordinate building security access, if necessary.
__ Stock the desk with essential supplies and equipment, such as pens, a notebook, computer and phone.
__ Make sure the employee can get into the network, voice mail and email.
__ Create a schedule for the new hire's first few days.
__ Put the person's name on his or her cube/office.
__ Have business cards ready, if possible.
__ On the first day, introduce the employee to coworkers around the office.
__ Consider scheduling a welcome lunch so the new hire can meet team members.
__ Provide a tour of the building.
__ Schedule an orientation to review the employee handbook, company history and policies.
__ Allow time to complete any required HR paperwork.
__ Assign a buddy or mentor to help with onboarding.
__ Spend time discussing the position’s goals and responsibilities.
__ Organize training sessions on office equipment, programs and procedures for the role.
__ Regularly check in with the employee during the first few months and encourage him or her to ask questions.
