To start off the new year, TCG Denver team members helped job seekers and University of Denver alumni pursue the careers they really want. The team did this as participants in the university’s January 15 career event, which provided resume tips — along with advice on successful networking, ways to develop relationships and how to stand out from the crowd.
A panel of recruiters and career experts got the event rolling. Their discussion stressed the importance of networking, which helps job seekers move beyond online resume submissions. Then it pointed out new ways to uncover job opportunities, such as working with a recruiter. Experts at the event also explained how to develop elevator pitches and engage in “small talk” when networking or meeting with hiring managers.
Key tips from the event
Recognize that networking is crucial. Whether you’re just starting your career or looking to make a change, learning how to network is one of the most important things you can do. Actively engaging in industry groups, both online and in person, lets you explore different options and develop key connections.
Take advantage of social media. If you’re new to social media, take a class on how to network online. It should offer pointers on how to build your online profile, identify relevant contacts, contribute to relevant conversations and be a resource to industry peers.
Make sure to follow up. “Star” networkers always take a next step after they’ve made a connection. Send a follow-up note, for example, and reference a conversation you had. Or send your new connection a link to some industry news that you think might be helpful. Also, if given the opportunity, try to learn something personal about your contacts, such as their favorite hobby, restaurant or sports team. This will help you build relationships that are both professional and friendly.
