What’s it like working as a recruiter for Robert Half Technology or as a candidate seeking a job? Why are our staffing and recruiting professionals in the best position to help you find a job? To answer these questions, we spoke with Jason Parker, recruiting manager on our Chicago team, who is celebrating his 10-year anniversary with the company.
What did you do before joining Robert Half Technology?
I worked for 8 years in corporate sales for Insight. Insight is a value-added reseller specializing in technology services.
What do you like most about your job?
I love learning about new industries and how technology impacts the business of those industries. I especially like the competitive nature of our job, it always keeps you on your toes!
What trends are you seeing in the tech industry?
Mobile app development, social media and cloud computing are big hiring trends in 2015.
What advice can you offer job seekers?
Treat your search as if you’re putting in a full day of work. Get up, get organized, and get busy finding a job. It can be very competitive, so the harder you work at it the more successful your search will be.
What is a way to stand out from other applicants?
Dress to impress, make sure you’re prepared and follow up with personal thank you notes. I always found the smallest touches make the biggest difference.
What’s the biggest job search mistake you see people make?
Being late to interviews. Promptness sets the tone, and when you’re late it causes doubt about your professionalism and interest in the position.
Any tips for job seekers who are considering working with a recruiter?
Find a recruiter that you like and stick with them. If there is a good connection, the recruiter will work that much harder for you to secure you a great opportunity. Follow up with them weekly, but don’t be too overbearing. A recruiter’s job is to find a fit for both the client and candidate and sometimes it takes more than a day or two. Trust that your recruiter is a professional.
