Chicago Jobs Report for March 2018

Review the latest Chicago-area jobs data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Employment growth in Chicago

In March, the Chicago area added 12,200 jobs. Overall employment increased 0.7 percent for the area from February 2017 to February 2018. Chicago’s year-over-year job growth during this period was well below the national average.

Unemployment rate in Chicago

As of March 2018, the Chicago area unemployment rate was 4.9 percent. Year-over-year, the area’s unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage point.

Illinois had an unemployment rate of 4.6 percent in March. The national unemployment rate stood at 4.1 percent.

Wages and salaries in Chicago

Chicago-area wages and salaries increased by 2.6 percent for the 12-month period ending December 2017. This was below the national average, which saw a 2.8 percent increase for the same period.
