In January, New York City lost 1,600 jobs. Overall employment increased 1.5 percent for the area from December 2016 to December 2017. New York City’s year-over-year job growth during this period was lower than the national average.

Unemployment rate in New York City

As of January 2018, the New York City area had an unemployment rate of 4.3 percent. Year over year, the area’s unemployment rate declined by 0.4 percentage point.

The state of New York had an unemployment rate of 4.7 percent in January, and the national unemployment rate stood at 4.1 percent.

Wages and salaries in New York City

New York City-area wages and salaries increased by 2.4 percent for the 12-month period ending December 2017. This is below the national average, which saw a 2.8 percent increase for the same period.
