Houston Jobs Report for January 2018

Employment growth in Houston

In January, the Houston area added 5,300 jobs. Overall employment increased 1.5 percent for the area from December 2016 to December 2017. Houston’s year-over-year job growth during this period was slightly lower than the national average.

Unemployment rate in Houston

As of January, the Houston area had an unemployment rate of 4.8 percent (non-seasonally adjusted). Year-over-year, the area’s unemployment rate declined by 1.0 percentage point (non-seasonally adjusted). Texas had an unemployment rate of 4.0 percent in January (seasonally adjusted), and the national unemployment rate was 4.1 percent (seasonally adjusted).

Wages and salaries in Houston

Houston-area wages and salaries increased by 2.0 percent for the 12-month period ending December 2017. This is below the national average, which saw a 2.8 percent increase for the same period.
