Chicago Jobs Report for January 2018

Employment growth in Chicago

In January, the Chicago area shed 96,900 jobs. Overall employment increased 0.7 percent for the area from December 2016 to December 2017. Chicago’s year-over-year job growth during this period was well below the national average.

Unemployment rate in Chicago

As of January 2018, the Chicago area had an unemployment rate of 5.1 percent. This is consistent with the unemployment rate of January 2017.  

Illinois had an unemployment rate of 4.8 percent in January. The national unemployment rate stood at 4.1 percent.

Wages and salaries in Chicago

Chicago-area wages and salaries increased by 2.6 percent for the 12-month period ending December 2017. This is below the national average, which saw a 2.8 percent increase for the same period.
